Cyprus protection offers two main type of security cameras.    

• Digital (IP) Security Cameras

• Analog Security Cameras or CCTV - (NOW discontinued)

There are many differences between digital & analog cameras. The main difference is the technology that each utilizes to produce an image and relay that image to a screen or monitor. In much the same way as you can compare a 35mm camera (analog) with the newer digital camera (they both produce pictures) BUT the technology they use to produce the pictures is very different.

Digital security camera technology allows for rapid integration with business networks. Control of cameras and images become part of the Local Area Network (LAN) and can easily be incorporated into the Wide Area Network (WAN).

The General Benefits of Network Camera Technology

There are advantages and disadvantages with both types of technology. Ultimately the newer digital technology will prove to be the winner - especially as internet bandwidth increases and prices tumble with economies of mass production.

The internet and bandwidth speeds of Cyprus are ultimately controlled by the Cyprus Telecommunication Authority (CYTA). Speeds and service remain one of the poorest in Europe.

Unfortunately, modern digital security cameras require bandwidth upload speeds of at least 256kb/s to operate effectively over the WAN. Our own experience suggests that CYTA are unable to provide a reliable upload speed of 256kb/s (despite contrary information provided by CYTA information or sales staff).

We suggest that business or individuals consider investing in modern digital camera security technology (LAN Only) and consider extending the main features of this technology (control over the WAN), when a reliable ISP is offering a service in your area. Only the following ISPs are able to provide suitable bandwidth for reliable use in conjunction with digital network security cameras. We recommend the following ISPs (in order of preference):
